Since its' opening in 1970 as the State College of Victoria, the Hawthorn Campus has been home to the many successor institutions which have evolved through organisational and curricular changes, affiliations, mergers and restructures. Prior to merging with The University of Melbourne, the campus was well known as the Hawthorn Institute of Education.

 Today the campus is owned and managed by UoM Commercial Ltd (UoMC), a subsidiary company of The University of Melbourne. The Hawthorn Campus is not only UoMC’s registered office and main office location, but also continues to house Melbourne Consulting and Custom Programs, the Hawthorn English Language Centre and various other tenancies.
